Abstract

1391601 Cover for Ingot Mould RESIL PROCESSES LTD 30 March 1972 [7 Jan 1971] 848/71 Addition to 1327041 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] A top cover of an ingot mould is formed of a composition comprising an organic material, a major proportion of which is comprised of wood shavings and sawdust, a comminuted cellulosic fibrous bonding material, and a flame resistant material selected from at least one of floaters, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, radiolarian earths and aluminosilicate materials, said flame resistant material being present in an amount of 25-87% by weight based on the total weight of the dry constituents of the composition. The top cover is produced by dispersing the constituents of the composition in an equeous medium to form a slurry, introducing the resultant slurry into a die which die includes means for the discharge of water in one direction only, and, a pressure-forming member constituting part of the die capable of acting on the contents of said die, pressing the contents of said die to express water therefrom via said discharge means, so that at least some orientation of the organic fibres within said shape occurs by means of water extruding through the interstices of the material during pressing, continuing pressing until a self supporting shape is obtained, removing said shape from said die, and thereafter drying and/or curing the shape at an elevated temperature. In the specific examples top covers are produced from (1) wood shavings and sawdust, paper, sisal and china clay; (2) wood shavings and sawdust, paper, sisal, ball clay and spent oxide; and (3) wood shavings and sawdust, paper, molar sinter fires and ball clay.
