Abstract
1388977 Heat pipes UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 13 Aug 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 38195/73 Heading F4U [Also in Division G6] A heat pipe of annular form and operative to cool at least one nuclear fuel pin 13 in a nuclear reactor, mainly during interruption of flow of a forced circulation liquid metal coolant 25, e.g. sodium, comprises spaced walls, only the vertical evaporator section 14<SP>1</SP> of which has secured thereon a capillary wick 24. A reservoir 23 of working fluid, e.g. lithium is provided at the lower end of the pipe, which fluid is so chosen as to be operative above a predetermined temperature. Heat passes radially outwardly of the heat pipe from the inner vertical evaporator section 14<SP>1</SP> to the vertical outer condenser section 17<SP>1</SP>.
