Abstract

1,187,391. Cooling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 10 May, 1967 [10 May, 1966], No. 20736/66. Heading G6C. In a fast reactor, the heat exchanger within the pressure vessel has liquid sodium as both primary and secondary coolant. To prevent an excessive rise in primary sodium vapour pressure, due to overheating, a sodium vapour condenser is mounted in the heat exchanger supports. Primary coolant from the core flows through the heat exchanger tubes 15, while secondary coolant flows upwards between the tubes from duct 13, and out through 14. Sodium vapour is condensed in the sprinkler and packedbed, 34, 35, through which primary sodium is pumped after cooling in compartment 30. The flow of primary core coolant through the exchanger is controlled by valve 36.
