Abstract
1388974 Filled Cables INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 4 June 1973 [7 June 1972] 26494/73 Heading H1A In a multi-conductor cable in which the core 1 and an optional insulating tape layer 2 are both impregnated with a gel filling medium, a composite two-ply insulating tape 3 has an impregnated inner ply 3<1>, e.g. of paper, and an impermeable outer ply 3<11> of thermoplastics material. A surrounding screening layer comprises a metal tape 4, e.g. of aluminium, which carries an inner coating 4<1>, and an outer coating 4<11>, both of thermoplastics material. A thermoplastics sheath 5 is extruded directly over the screening layer, becoming bonded to its outer coating 4<11>, and the heat of the extrusion process may also cause the inner coating 4<1> to become bonded to the outer ply 3<11>. Alternatively, this latter bonding operation may be carried out as a separate process. Suitable thermoplastics materials include polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers and P.V.C. Insulating layer 3 may either be wound helically or wrapped around with its edges extended longitudinally and overlapped. The coated screen 4 is preferably wrapped, with its longitudinal edges overlapped, but it may instead be helically wound. Where both are wrapped, the seams are oppositely disposed. Insulating layer 2 may be omitted.
