Abstract

1388904 Two stroke & four stroke engines; driving gear; valves W E SALZMANN 10 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 11441/72 Addition to 1316775 Heading FIB [Also in Division F2] In an improvement of the piston machine claimed in Specification 1316777 the skirtless piston 130, Fig.3 is guided in contact with a swept volume contracted cylinder lining surface 90 which is coated with an abrasion-resistant material and ground and which corresponds approximately to the envelope surface of the rocking and reciprocating surface of the piston periphery. The right hand side of Figs.3 and 4 shown an Otto cycle engine with sheet metal construction whilst the left hand side shows a diesel engine with cast parts. The cylinder has a cast or sheet metal cooling water chamber 102. The piston has slide valves 126 controlling inlet and exhaust ports 140, 147 and a combustion channel 134 into which fuel is injected at 135. Air compressed in the crank-case passes through side scavenging troughs 143 and may pass through an end trough 145. The piston seals Fig.5 may be provided singly in the right hand engine and doubly in the left hand engine. Alternative seals may be cylinders 157, Fig.6 or a corner seal 159, Fig.7 (not shown), with overlap joints. In another embodiment a piston 185, Fig.9 has a cooling water chamber feed by tubular rockers 186 which can also comprise an oil supply to piston seals which are accessible by outwardly hinging lining bodies 189 and pivoting the piston outwardly. The piston has seals comprising tubes in guides 227, Fig.13 which may be acted on by gas admitted through bores 229 and on some sides of the piston the guide bars are acted on by a leaf-spring. The tubes may be replaced by light metal rods with iron, chromium or 'Nikosil' surface. Seal strips 230 may be replaced by tubes or rods in guide bars. The rocking pistons may have a round, oval or rectangular piston outline.
