Abstract
1388765 Inserting cables in ducts POST OFFICE 24 April 1972 18936/72 Heading H2C A machine for propelling flexible rods through duets preparatory to drawing cables therethrough comprises a carriage 1 upon which are mounted rod clamps 5 and 6 which are applied and relaxed, e.g. by a clamping cylinder C2 containing a piston, and a fluid operated drive, e.g. a drive cylinder C1 containing a piston, that is arranged to reciprocate the carriage; a mechanism, such as a system of valves, the operation of which is described, co-ordinates the clamp piston and the drive piston such that the clamps are applied during movement of the carriage in one direction and relaxed during movement of the carriage in the other direction; a manually operated control enables the drive direction of the machine to be reversed; means 11-18 anchor the machine to a duct. The frame of the machine has extensions 10 and 19 at its ends to facilitate handling and location of the machine in use. The extensions may be locked in a number of positions by pins 12 and 20. Pin 11 is pivoted at the end of extension 10 and engages the cylinder 15 which carries a adjustable plug for insertion into the end of the duet through which the rod is to be drawn. The plug is expanded to grip the inside of the duct by tightening two wing nuts 16. When the machine is operating the rod passes through the plug assisted by the roller 14, through the guide 7, between the clamps 5 and 6 and through the guides 8. Exhaust valves in the valve system are provided with exhaust silencers 21.
