1337553 Welding by fusion; soldering PROEKTNO-KONSTRUKTORSKOE BJURO PO MEKHANIZATSII ENERGETICHESKOGO STROITELSTVA and VSESOJUZNY ZAOCHNY MASHINOSTROITELNY INSTITUT 22 March 1972 13278/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division E2] Pipe or rod (e.g. square or round section) endto-end aligning and jointing (soldering or welding) apparatus comprises a carriage 1 horizontally movable by a double-acting fluid (e.g. air) pressure cylinder 23, a vertical column 2 mounted on said carriage so as to be pivotally movable about a vertical axis 5, a cantilever yoke 8 mounted on said column so as to be pivotally movable about a horizontal axis 7, and a clamping and jointing mechanism 12 which is mounted in said yoke so as to be pivotally movable about an axis 11 at right angles to the axis 7, and which carries two coaxial pairs of pipe or rod grippers. Each gripper comprises a jaw 20 pivoted on one end of a spring-returned bell-crank lever 16 pivoted on the mechanism 12. When the carriage is moved towards the pipes or rods the free ends 18 of the lever 16 bear against the pipe or rod peripheries to effect inward gripping movement of the jaws 20. As shown, to permit rotation of the pipes or rods about their common axis when held in the jaws 20, the latter are provided with ball-bearings 22; and the mechanism 12 includes a power transformer 13 and an inductor 14.
