Abstract

893,001. Stretching. BIGWOOD & SON Ltd., JOSHUA. Dec. 16, 1960 [Jan. 2, 1960], No. 156/60. Class 83 (4). A stretching machine of the type in which metal sheet, gripped at its ends between jaws of gripper heads, is stretched when the heads are moved apart, is characterized in that each gripper head has a passage formed therein and extending through the gripper head in line with the opening between the jaws so that strip can be passed from a coil through the passages in the gripper heads and a length of strip can be gripped, stretched and then released from the machine by passing it out through the said passages. One gripper head 11 is normally stationary during stretching, but is adjustable along a bed 12 by screws 17 driven by an electric motor 19. The other gripper head 10 is urged, by piston rods 13 in fluid-pressure cylinders 14, away from the head 11 to stretch strip, extending from a coil, therebetween, the head 10 running on rollers 16 on the bed 12. The body of each gripper head has a passage extending therethrough defined by guides 20 faced with non-abrasive material 22. Each series of grip blocks 23 of a gripper head is actuated by a piston rod 24 of a fluid-pressure cylinder 26. Specifications 614,186, 739,291 and 809,619 are referred to.
