Abstract
1,066,381. Stretching. H. S. HODDING (E. W. BLISS CO.). Jan. 21, 1965, No. 2762/65. Heading B3E. A gripper for metal stretching apparatus comprises a pair of jaws movable longitudinally of an elongated workpiece, cam means for forcing the jaws towards each other and into gripping contact with the workpiece as they are moved longitudinally of the workpiece, and means for driving the jaws towards the workpiece including a first element in driving contact with the jaws, a second element slidable in a direction generally perpendicular to the direction of movement of said jaws and cam means between the elements for forcing the first element towards the jaws when the second element is moved in said perpendicular direction. Jaws 30, 32 running on inclined guides 62, are closed on to a sheet B, to be stretched, by movement of an element 82, abutting the rear of the jaws, in the axial direction of the sheet B. The element 82 is so moved by a co-operating element 90 moved by a cylinder means 100, 102 in a direction at right angles to the movement of the member 82, the members 82, 90 being formed with co-operating saw-tooth wedge surfaces, Fig. 7 (not shown). The jaws 30, 32 are held in contact with the member 82 by pivoted levers 120, 122 urged by cylinder means 126. Sheet, strip or bar may be stretched.
