Abstract

1386392 Transfer marking elements POLYMARK Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 61789/70 Addition to 1201713 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B6 and C3] A heat-sealable marking element comprises a temporary or permanent support and a marking on said support, the marking element incorporating an addition resin system as a bonding layer and/or the marking and the resin system comprising: (a) a copolymer of a monomer having, or capable of providing, active hydrogen atoms and of at least one other monomer capable of producing a filmforming copolymer; (b) blocked cross linking groups (i.e. groups which yield cross linkable groups at elevated temperature) which are either part of the aforesaid copolymer or are present in a separate cross-linking agent; and (c) acid or acid-yielding groups which are either part of the aforesaid copolymer or are present in a separate curing agent, the system being such that under the action of heat and pressure the marking element becomes bonded to a surface to be marked and converted to an inert, insoluble and wear resistant form. The marking element may be a heat transfer or label produced by printing a pattern, e.g. by screen printing techniques, on a temporary release carrier such as polyester or triacetate film, optionally laminated to paper. A clear bonding layer may be applied over the printed pattern. Typical of illustrated resin systems are acrylonitrile/butyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, vinylidene cyanide/vinyl benzoate/acrylamide copolymer, vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride/ 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate copolymer, α-chloroacrylonitrile/isodecyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer and acrylonitrile/n-butyl acrylate/N-n-butoxy methyl-acrylamide/acrylic acid copolymer with, where appropriate, a separate cross linking agent and/or acidic curing agent, and optionally also a plasticiser.
