Abstract

1,215,007. Coated article. POLYMARK Ltd. 1 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 10949/ 67. Heading B2E. A marking element permanently attachable by heat and pressure to a surface comprises a flexible support incorporating a film-forming resin system containing alkylol or alkoxy alkyl groups and acid or acid-yielding groups, the resin system being capable of being cured by the application of heat and under acid conditions to an insoluble cross-linked condition, and an information-bearing marking printed on the support. The ink used for producing the marking preferably employs a medium consisting of a similar resin to that applied to the support. The support can be formed of paper, fabric e.g. woven cotton fabric, or plastics foil. The film-forming resin may consist of a solubilised linear polyamide e.g. a nylon-type polyamide which has been converted into soluble form containing alkoxy alkyl groups by treatment with an aldehyde such as formaldehyde, or alcohol-soluble copolyamides in conjunction with a cross-linking agent containing alkoxy alkyl groups e.g. a formaldehyde resin containing alkoxy alkyl groups; or an acrylic resin which may include a reactive comonomer, such as acrylic acid, acrylamide or hydroxyethyl acrylates, with the further addition of a cross-linking agent containing alkoxy alkyl groups, or a self crosslinking comonomer such as N-alkoxy alkyl acrylamide. The film-forming resin may be applied in a solution or dispersion as a coating or an impregnating agent. The printing may be effected by letter-press, offset litho, flexographic or gravure or screen printing. After printing, a continuous coating of the resin mixture may be applied to form a protective surface on the marking element. Various solutions, dispersions and inks are given in the examples. The marking elements may be textured while on the article by a presser member.
