1394256 Paper backed fabric laminates TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 29 Sept 1972 44949/72 Heading B5N A process for the preparation of a composite paper backed fabric comprises distributing a thermoplastics adhesive material evenly between a fabric and a backing paper to form spaced portions of the material raised above the surface of the backing paper, applying heat and pressure at a temperature higher than the meltting point of the adhesive material but below any softening or melting point of a polymer forming the fabric to bond the spaced apart portions more strongly to the paper than to the fabric but sufficiently weakly to the fabric to permit the backing paper and adhesive material to be peeled from the fabric. The thermoplastic material which may be of polyethylene, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, nylon 6/66/610, nylon 6/66/610/12 or a polyester derived from terephthalic acid, adipic acid and/or isophthalic acid and ethylene glycol and/or butanediol may be applied in the form of a net which may be formed of a knitted or woven fibre or made by embossing one or both surfaces of a film and drawing the film biaxially. Alternatively, the thermoplastic material may be applied as a powder or as a non-woven fabric. Specified fabrics are nylon taffeta, polyester taffeta, a mixed polyester-cotton fabric or rayon satin. The backing paper may be of any type, e.g. draft paper, kraft paper or Manila board. Bonding may be effected using a heated press or belt-cylinder combination. The fabric of the composite may be ink printed, e.g. by gravure, offset or relief printing or dye printed, e.g. by machine. Many suitable uses for the printed fabric are listed.
