Abstract
1386041 Grinding P WOLTERS 25 Jan 1973 [1 Feb 1972] 3820/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division F2] A lapping or honing machine comprises a pressure unit which acts on a lapping or honing wheel, and a control device for adjusting the force applied by the pressure unit, the device causing the force to increase steplessly from a starting value to a maximum value, to be held at the maximum value for a predetermined length of time and to be finally reduced to a final value. As described, the machine has a stand 1 supporting a lower lapping wheel 2 and an upper lapping wheel 3 between which workpieces 4 are located. The upper wheel 3 is rotatably mounted in a tubular part 5 and is driven by a spindle 6 passing through the part. An annular shoulder 7 is formed on the part 5 and divides a cylinder into chambers 8, 9. The upper chamber is connected directly to a pressure medium source 10, and the lower chamber is connected by a valve 11 to a source and controlled so that the force supplied increases with time in a straight line or in a curve, is maintained at the maximum force, and is then decreased in steps or in a straight line. Alternatively, the pressure may be varied in the upper chamber. The valve consists of a member 13 engaged by a spring 14 which, in turn, is engaged by a movable part 15 of a spindle 17 driven by a D.C. motor 16. An attachment 20 on the part 15 co-operates with a pair of limit switches 18, 19 which are adjustable by spindles 21, 22. The chamber 8 is connected to an inlet 23 of the valve and an outlet 24 is connected to a pressure storage container. The valve acts as a throttle and pressure in the chamber 8 is adjusted by the tension in spring 14 as controlled by the motor 16. The limit switch 18 is adjusted to control the maximum pressure, and limit switch 19 is adjusted to control the starting and final pressures in the chamber. In another embodiment, the member 13 is movable by a cam or electromagnetically. In another embodiment, the upper lapping plate 3 is rotatably mounted on a part 5, Fig. 3, formed with shoulders 25, 26 abutting a pair of springs 27 between which is an annulus 32 connected by an arm 28 to a support 30 engaging a screw-threaded spindle 20 driven by an electric motor according to a programme so as to control the force applied by the lapping wheel.
