A grinding or polishing machine comprises a head 10 for supporting a band 16 coated with abrasive material, and a support 21 on which the head is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis which lies substantially in the plane of the centre line of the band when in position. The head 10 includes a contact pulley 11, a pulley 17 having an adjusting worm 18 for controlling tracking of the band, a pulley 15 loaded by spring or other means for tensioning the band, and a pulley 19 driven by a belt from a motor. In addition, pulley 11 is resiliently urged about a pivot 13 by a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit 14 to absorb sudden acceleration of the head and prevent over-polishing of the work. The head is secured to a hollow pivot spindle mounted for movement in a block 23 on the end of a horizontal shaft 24 the axis of which passes through the centre line of the band. The shaft 24 is mounted in bearings in a member 25 pivoted on a vertical axis 26, Fig. 2 (not shown), on the column 21. The weight of the head is counterbalanced by a weighted arm 27 and a pneumatic biasing device 29, and a telescopic assembly 28 controls the pressure applied to the work as it passes horizontally beneath the contact pulley. A gear 31 is mounted on bearings on the shaft 24 and engages a gear 32 for adjusting the inclination of the head about the axis of the shaft 24. A pair of oppositely acting springs 33, 34, Fig. 3 (not shown), act on the gear to resiliently urge the head to a datum position, and a pneumatic device 35 is provided to turn the head if desired.
