Abstract

623,208. Grinding and polishing. BRYANT CHUCKING GRINDER CO. Sept. 27, 1946, No. 28987. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1945. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a grinding machine having a carriage supported on spaced ways for sliding motion, for relative axial traverse of the grinding wheel and the work, the carriage is rocked so as to cause separation of the grinding wheel and the work laterally of the direction of sliding motion of said carriage by changing from a lower value to a higher value the pressure of lubricant supplied to one of the ways. As applied to an internal grinding machine, the grinding wheel shaft 5 is journalled in a support 4 carried on a traversing carriage 3 supported firstly on a bar 2 slidably and rockably supported in the machine bed 1, and secondly by a bracket 10 projecting from the rear face of the machine bed and carrying at its upper end 11 a plate 12 upon which slidably engages a shoe 13 pivoted on an axis element 15 extending across a slot 17 in the under side of the carriage 3. Lubricant is forced by a pump 21 through a strainer 22 and pipe 23 to a passage 25 in the slide shoe 13; the system includes a valve 26 and a relief valve 29 which determines the normal lubricating pressure. When the valve 26 is shut by the operator, the pressure in the system is determined by a relief valve 24 set to give a higher pressure sufficient to tilt the carriage 3 about the bar 2 so as to move the grinding wheel laterally out of contact with the work to enable the grinding wheel to be withdrawn axially from the work, which is rotatably mounted in a work support fixed to the bed 1. Alternatively the carriage 3 may carry the work, the grinding wheel being mounted on the bed 1.
