Abstract

1,223,322. Grinding machine. A. A. JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd., and J. HOULDSWORTH. 30 May, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 26521/68. Heading B3D. In a cylinder grinding machine comprising a wheelhead carrying a rotatable grinding wheel, and two spaced supports between which a workpiece to be ground is mounted for presentation to the grinding wheel, one of the workpiece supports 1 is carried by a mounting 2 through the medium of a resiliently flexible hinge 10 so that the support is movable relative to the mounting to shift one end of a mounted workpiece relative to its other end and so apply a taper adjustment, and means are provided for moving the workpiece support relatively to its mounting in controlled fashion. In the machine described, the support is a tailstock 1 mounted on the mounting 2 via a cross-strap hinge 10. The hinge comprises two parts each consisting of an elongate strip 11a or 12a bolted to the mounting 2 and tailstock 1 respectively and a series of regularly spaced lugs 11b, 12b projecting from one edge of the respective strip and bolted to the corresponding other member, the lugs being interfitted. A plunger 17 screw-threaded in the tailstock 1 bears at its lower end against the mounting 2 so that rotation of the plunger in the appropriate direction causes the tailstock to pivot anti-clockwise about the axis of hinge 10 and so move the workpiece horizontally towards the grinding wheel. Rotation of the plunger in the opposite direction allows the tailstock to return under its own weight and the action of the resilience of the hinge. The plunger 17 carries a component 19 having a pair of radial arms one of which is engaged by an adjusting screw threaded into the tailstock 1 and rotatable to rotate the plunger in one direction, and the other of which is engaged by a compression spring to return the plunger. Instead of the above arrangement the tailstock may be moved hydraulically. The tailstock supports a centre by means of a spring-loaded sleeve 5 which can be moved axially be means of a rack-and-pinion, 7, under control of a handle 9. The mounting 2 is slidable on a table 3 which is itself slidable on the machine bed to move the workpiece axially relative to the grinding wheel.
