A crush trueing apparatus for a grinding wheel 15 comprises a pair of backing rolls 92 for transmitting the load from a crushing roller 61 to a supporting slide 41 during a crush trueing operation. The backing rolls are rotatably mounted on shafts 91 secured to the slide which is movable towards and from the grinding wheel along guideways 43 on a slideway 42 adjustably secured about a pivot 54 on the grinding wheel slide 11 to permit parallel alignment of the crushing roller with the grinding wheel. The slide 41 has a pair of cylindrical openings 66 slidably receiving rods 65 supporting vertically adjustable blocks 63 having pointed screws 62 engaging the ends of the crushing roller. The slide 41 is movable towards and from the grinding wheel by a screw 114 which engages a nut 112 on the slideway 42 and is connected to the piston 111 of a device 110 having a cylinder connected to the slide 41, the arrangement being such that fluid pressure supplied to the device 110 advances the slide 41 first at a rapid and then at a slow speed. The screw 114 is rotatable by gearing 128, 129 and a shaft 131 connectible by gearing 102, 103 and an overrunning clutch 150 to a hand wheel 101 for initial adjustment of the slide. The clutch is also connected by a pin 155 to a piston 141 which is movable against a spring 142 by fluid pressure supplied to a port 144 to advance the slide incrementally a distance determined by an adjustable stop 145 after each trueing operation to compensate for the reduction in size of the grinding wheel after each trueing operation. The grinding wheel, which may be profiled to grind the roll W of a rod rolling mill, is mounted on a spindle 14 connected by a belt 21 to the shaft 18 of a motor 17. The shaft 18 is provided with a brake 35 and is connected by a belt 29 and speed-reducing gear to a motor 22. In operation, the grinding wheel is rotated at high speed for the grinding operation. When it is desired to true the wheel, the wheel is retracted by movement of the slide 11 on guideway 13 and the motor de-energized and stopped by the brake 35. Thereafter, the brake 35 is released and the motor 22 energized to rotate the grinding wheel at low speed and fluid pressure is supplied to the device 110 to advance the crushing roller into engagement with the grinding wheel. Brushes 77 and a diaphragm 81 keep the crushing roller and backing rolls clear. The crushing roller may be easily exchanged by withdrawing the rods 65 from the openings 66, the rods being releasably retained in the openings by screws 161 engaging slots in the rods. In an embodiment in which the crushing roller does not have a substantial area of constant diameter, the roller has spaced portions beyond the operative portion for engagement with the backing rolls. The trueing slide may be mounted for vertical horizontal or other movement radial to the grinding wheel.
