Abstract

1385330 Two part couplings ESSEX INTERNATIONAL Inc 11 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 32357/72 Heading H2E A connector comprises contact carriers 2, 3 each holding stud contacts (30, 34, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), an elastomeric contact disc 4, an outer coupling ring 1 and means for axially moving the carrier 2 after the ring 1 has engaged the carrier 3. Before the carrier 3 is engaged, the carrier 2 is held within the ring 1, against a spring 5, by engagement of flanges 19 below flanges 12. In mating, firstly the carrier 3 is inserted into the ring 1, flanges 25 passing between flanges 12. Ribs 44 and slots 45 prevent relative rotation of the carriers 2, 3. Then the ring 1 is rotated so that the flanges 25 pass beneath the flanges 12 to prevent separation. Upon further rotation, the flanges 19 reach the gaps between the flanges 12, and the spring 5 drives the carrier 2 axially. This provides a snap action which indicates that assembly has been completed. Rotation in the uncoupling direction is harder as the carrier 2 has to be driven back against the spring 5 by cams 21. The disc 4 is of silicone rubber. Portions 39, containing silver-plated copper spheres of 80- 200 Ám diameter, ensure reliable connection despite differences in the contact heights (Fig. 4, not shown). The disc 4 also provides a seal. Finger grips 13, 28 are provided. The contact heads (30, 34) are formed integrally at the ends of wires (31, 35) and are held by force-fitted sleeves (33, 37).
