Abstract

1435429 Two-part couplings ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 18 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 31847/74 Heading H2E A connector comprises mating plug and receptacle members 14, 12, each having an elastic pliant body, e.g. polyurethane. The receptacle having a resilient, radially expandable sleeve 16 and a projection 18 inside the sleeve 16, and the plug having an annular section 26 which slides into the annular recess 24. There is a seal, between the inner surface 22 of the sleeve and the outer surface 32 of the annular section, comprising annular ribs 34 on the plug, designed to make an interference fit so that air and moisture can be kept out of the connector. The two parts are releasably held together by a latch comprising a flange 42 on the sleeve 16 and a flange 46 on the plug 14 having bevelled surfaces 48, 50 respectively which engage when the plug is fully inserted and the sleeve springs back to its normal position. The plug and receptacle members have axially aligned contact passages 54, 52 containing pin and socket contacts 58, 56 respectively. The contact 56 may be retained in place by a resilient finger (90, Fig. 7, not shown), on the wall of the contact passage, which extends into a recess in the contact. A rear seal is provided to surround the insulated wire 60, comprising deformable ribs 72 which, like the ribs 34, may have a periphery having a convex longitudinal cross-section. Another embodiment of the seal (Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a rearwardly facing lip (86) terminating in a radially expandable sleeve (88). The rear sections 74 of the plug and receptacle have a reduced cross-section and grooves 78 so that the walls between contact passages are thin and resilient and can accommodate different sizes of wires. In another embodiment the mating surfaces 20, 38 of the first embodiment are cylindrical (Fig. 3, not shown). The seal between the surfaces 22 and 32 may be provided by a flexible skirt (84, Fig. 4, 5, not shown) projecting from a recess in the plug either forwardly or rearwardly of the retaining flange 42. Any combination of the disclosed seals may be used on the connector, in any position.
