Abstract
1384828 Retaining loads by suction MASAHARU MATSUO 31 July 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 36421/73 Heading B8A A perforated endless belt driven in a closed loop passes over a row of suction chambers to which a vacuum source is sequentially connected by means of a rotary valve. In Fig. 1 a sheet of cardboard 92 is retained in required position on belt 10 by means of suction applied to each chamber 16 sequentially via conduits 26 and a rotary valve having sections 20, 22. The belt and valve are driven in synchronism by common motor 14. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section of one of the two valve sections which are arranged axially on a shaft 34. Vanes 80 and 86 define an orifice between the centre of shaft 34 which is connected to the vacuum pump and a series of ports axially juxtaposed in an arc of about 180 degrees on the rotor casing, each port connected by a conduit 26 to one of the vacuum chambers. As shaft 34 rotates the orifice of section 20 sweeps the associated ports and then the orifice of section 22 which is offset by 180 degrees from that of section 20 sweeps its associated parts, so that the orifices of the two exhaust conduits sweep the ten ports 24 consecutively and at uniform intervals during each revolution of shaft 34.
