Abstract
1384752 Rolling mills LEAR SIEGLER Inc 5 July 1972 [6 July 1971 10 May 1972] 31413/72 Heading B3M A gear rolling machine includes a gear rolling die 24 carried on a fixed support 20, a second die 34 carried on a vertically movable support 30, and a workpiece holder 24 which positions a workpiece gear 48 between the dies. The holder 24 allows free vertical movement of the gear 48 during a rolling operation, but positions the gear clear of both dies during a loading or unloading operation when the die 34 is moved away from the die 24. As shown in Fig. 1, the workpiece holder 44 is connected by a rod to a spring assembly 50 which biases the holder upwardly. However, when the support 30 is moved downwardly by a cylinder unit 36, a C-shaped bracket at 52 pulls the lower end of the rod downwardly (after a degree of lost motion) until the holder 44 abuts an adjustable stop 49. A spring capsule carried by the rod permits the rod to continue moving downwardly without moving the holder 44. The spring assembly 50 provides a counterbalancing force which either biases the holder upwardly, or just allows it to fall under the action of gravity. The two dies are carried on supports whose angle of skew can be varied. In an alternative form, Fig. 3, a simple biassing spring 176 is provided, and a cylinder unit 182. The unit moves the workpiece support downwardly against a stop 180 when the lower die support is lowered. The unit 182 can be used alone, without the need for a counterbalancing spring.
