Abstract

1384144 Laminated fibrous materials TEXTILKOMBINAT COTTBUS VEB 4 July 1972 31277/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] One or more polypropylene films are irradiated with electron beams and mono-axially stretched before or after being contacted with one or more webs comprising non-thermoplastic fibres; the combination is then mechanically consolidated by the needles of a needle beam or of a sewing-knitting machine or by a calender and also heated. The fibres may be cotton, viscose rayon or polyacrylonitrile, e.g. as a corded web. Localized bonding may be produced by localized heating using pulsed laser beams to produce bonds in the form of points, parallel lines or two sets of parallel lines which cross at an angle, by heated needles or by calendering. The electron bombardment produces polymerization initiating species with a significant life. Such species are destroyed where localized bonding is produced by laser beam, but elsewhere the species cause graft polymerization if the web is immersed in a bath of aqueous acrylic acid at 70‹ C. or brought into contact with unsaturated polyester resin. The acrylic acid solution contains a dye with is taken up where graft polymerization occurs to produce a patterned fabric.
