Abstract

1383313 Flexible hoses COMPOFLEX CO Ltd 16 May 1972 [21 May 1971] 16234/71 Heading F2P In a method of making flexible tubes or hoses a layer 2 of plastics material is formed with internal and external helical corrugations and placed over a mandrel over which a wire 1 has been helically wound to the length of the liner and with a pitch equal to that of the liner corrugations. The liner is positioned so that the pitch of the wire coincides with the internal corrugations of the layer 2 and the wire is then released from the mandrel to spring outwardly and enter the corrugations. The layer 2 and wire helix are secured against rotation on the mandrel and further layers 3, 4 are wound about the layer 2. An armouring wire 5 is also wound about the tube to compress the layers 3, 4 into the external corrugations of the layer 2. The layer 2 is preferably of polypropylene although it may alternatively be of nylon, fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer, PVC, polythene or PVC/nitrile and may be formed by extrusion. The further layers 3, 4 are of woven fabric such as polypropylene, nylon, glass, cotton or asbestos cloth, either plain or coated with PVC, neoprene or synthetic rubber. One or more coated fabric layers 4 may be wound over one or more plain fabric layers 3 or vice versa. The internal wire 1 may be of steel,- galvanized or stainless steel, aluminium or plastics coated steel wire and may be of circular or half round cross-section. The external wire 5 may be of similar materials and is preferably of circular cross-section.
