Abstract

1383308 Treating charge J A BUTLER 13 April 1972 12315/71 Addition to 1352148 Heading F1B The engine claimed in Specification 1352148 is modified by means whereby water can be admitted into the air-stream in measured quantities before the air is distributed to the engine cylinders at or approaching maximum load conditions. Water is drawn from a constant level sump 101, Fig. 2, through a valve 102 and restrictor 104 into induction pipe 111. Valve 102 may be connected directly through rod 107 to engine throttle rod 109 or indirectly through a pendulum 108 which can swing freely in a plane parallel to the vehicle's direction, When the pendulum is fitted, the valve and restrictor are set to provide maximum water addition only when pendulum is lagging to its maximum extent i.e. when accelerating or climbing a hill. Sump 101 may be mounted directly on an engine manifold. Isopropanal may also be added. A second passage may inter-connect the space above the liquid with the induction passage.
