Abstract

1381960 Storage CONSTRUCTIONS MILLS K 26 April 1972 [12 May 1971] 19438/72 Heading A4T A carrier 1 runs in a corridor on storage rails 2, 3 and has a raisable surface 5 so that articles can be raised or lowered from a storage position. The carrier is automatically controlled from a remote position and its power supply and the control signals for its automatic selector are transmitted through a cable 7 from a fixed outlet 8 to a slip ring device 11 for the carrier circuits 12. The cable 7 passes through a guide 9 to a winch 10 which takes in or pays out the cable. The winch drum 10 on a shaft 14, Fig.2 is driven through a coupling 17 from a shaft 15 in turn driven from a shaft 18 through either a one way drive 21-24 or 25, 26. The shaft 18 has a pulley 19 driven by a chain 20 from the carrier wheels and the coupling 17 is of the electromagnetic powder type so that when the cable is being pulled off the winch it can only turn in direction F3 opposite to the turning caused by the chain 20 through drive 25, 26 in direction F1 by overcoming the friction of the coupling 17 so that the cable always remains taut. A transfer device 100, Fig.6 to take the carrier 1 to another corridor or the entrance and exit points has a cable 107 from an external point connected through a second winch 110 to a connector 108 to which the cable 7 is connected. The transfer device may include an elevator to raise the carrier 1 to other storage levels or may be able to move into a lift. In all examples direct cable connections are made to the cable 7 to ensure continuity although the cable 7 may be disconnectable to allow the carrier to be left in a storage corridor while other movements are made.
