Abstract

1379673 Two-part couplings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 June 1972 [8 July 1971] 26448/72 Heading H2E A high-power socket comprises a valve 11 which closes, within 2À5 ms. of the withdrawal of a mating plug, to prevent ionized gas from escaping and allowing a discharge from an energized contact to an earthed shield. The valve 11 comprises a hinged member 15, biased by a spring 19, and a seat member 14 which fits in the end of an insulating sleeve 10. A collar 22 provides a gas-tight seal. The sleeve 10 fits in a bore (8, Fig. 1, not shown) in a socket housing (2). The socket contact (5) is cemented at the other end of the sleeve 10 from the valve 11. Pieces 10a, 13 of gas-evolving, arc-extinguishing, material are mounted in the sleeve 10 and at the end of the male contact. The sleeve 10 slides in the bore (8) to provide more rapid making and breaking of the connection, as described in U.S. Specification 3,542,986. Suitable materials for the various parts are listed. The valve 11 also provides a seal against moisture and dirt.
