Abstract

1403547 Circuit interrupters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 Aug 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 36071/72 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] In a high voltage socket connector, escape of ionized gas produced by arcing, together with gas liberated by arc-quenching elements 9, 11, is prevented by 0-rings 14a, 14b, in grooves 14a<SP>1</SP> and 14b<SP>1</SP> as long as the mating pin 10, 11 is partially engaged, and, after the pin 10, 11 has been withdrawn by a valve 15 which is as described and claimed in Specification 1,379,673. Flow of gas passing the 0-rings is restricted by turbulence which also cools the gas and thus makes arcing less likely. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the 0-rings are omitted and the grooves have a square-section (17, 18) to induce turbulence in the gas. Surface 12 forms a water-tight seal with the mating voltage-grading surface (not shown if the plug connector. The contact 4 is connected by a flexible coiled conductor 5 and a terminal 6 to a threaded conductor 3. The contact 4, together with an insulating tube and member 9, slides relative to an aluminium cylinder 8 to provide a load-break function, as described in U.S.A. Specification 3,542,986. The housing 2 may be supported by a bushing module (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,097,978.
