Abstract

1378779 Particle spectrometers HEWLETTPACKARD CO 31 Jan 1972 [1 March 1971] 4474/72 Heading H1D A particle-detecting system applied to an electron spectrometer comprises a detector such as a vidicon 34, a phosphor screen 30 and an electron multiplier 28, the output of the detector being fed via a pulse-shaping discriminator 42 to a multichannel analyser 46 comprising a plurality of storage registers, and the spectrum is scanned across the detector by varying the retarding potential applied to an electron lens 20 at the entrance to the spectrometer. This retarding potential and the scanning potential of the vidicon at the instant a particle is detected are combined in an appropriate way in a voltage summer 54 to produce a signal representing the energy of the detected particle and this signal selects an appropriate one of the registers in analyser 46 into which the signal from the vidicon 34 is fed and stored. The apparatus is used repetitively so that each register records the number of particles falling within a particular band of the spectrum.
