Abstract

1378600 Easy-open can end CEBAL GP 14 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 57838/72 Heading B8D An easy-open metal can end 1 comprises a peripheral circular tearline 3 defining a tear-out panel, and a second tearline 6, which partially surrounds the rivet of a pull tab 5 and which consists of a first straight branch 7 extending perpendicular to and joining the peripheral tearline and a second curved branch 7<SP>1</SP> looping towards the centre of the end, the second branch lying wholly to one side of a diameter of the can end extending from the junction 8 of the straight branch and peripheral tearline. As shown, the end 10 of the second branch terminates on a chord drawn from the junction 8 at an angle of 25 degrees to said diameter and is defined by the point at which a circle having a diameter half that of the tearline 3 intersects the chord. The second branch subtends an angle of between 200 and 280 degrees. On raising the tab, tearing is propagated along branches 7 and 7<SP>1</SP> and continues along - the second branch and the peripheral tearline 3 in the direction of arrow F until points 10 and 11 are reached. Continued tearing then occurs in opposite directions from point 8 and point 11 as in a conventional can end provided with a single peripheral score.
