Abstract

1458425 Riveting AMERICAN CAN CO 10 May 1974 [27 July 1973] 20720/74 Heading B3U [Also in Division B8] A pull tab 32, which is secured by a rivet 40 intermediate its nose portion 36 and handle portion 34 to the score-defined panel 12 of a "pull-open" can end closure, is provided with a preformed camber 70 which is flexed to a more flattened form on riveting of the tab to the panel so that, on doming of the closure under pressure of the can contents when the end is seamed to a can body, the tab handle portion does not arise above the seam rim 24. The camber extends between abutment points 82 adjacent the tab nose portion and mid points 74 of the handle portion, which points are urged against the end panel on attachment of the tab and reactively tensions the slack metal in the end panel resulting from scoring and forming of the panel causing the axis of the rivet to heel from its perpendicular relation to the panel to an inclined position b<SP>1</SP>. However the tab is still sufficiently cambered and stressed that on doming of the end closure under internal pressure, the tab handle portion still does not rise above the seam. An ancillary initiallyruptured score 50, 52 is provided adjacent the rivet.
