Abstract

1378577 Photographic silver halide materials EASTMAN KODAK CO 30 March 1972 [12 April 1971] 15100/72 Heading G2C A light-sensitive photographic material comprises a support carrying at least one silver haloiodide emulsion layer and over this emulsion layer a silver precipitating layer and a low sensitivity fine-grain silver halide layer in which the halide is chloride and/or bromide, the grain size is less than 0À1 micron and the speed at least 50 times less than that of the silver haloiodide layer. The silver precipitating layer may comprise metal sulphides, polysulphides, selenides or polyselenides, thiourea, stannous halides, heavy metals, particularly Carey Lea silver, or their salts and fogged silver halide. As the fine-grain silver halide layer a Lippmann silver bromide emulsion having a grain size of 0À01 to 0À05 micron and a speed at least 100 times slower than the silver haloiodide layer is preferred. In one embodiment the fine-grain emulsion is adjacent the silver haloiodide layer and the silver precipitating layer is coated thereover. The fine-grain emulsion prevents iodide ions migrating from the haloiodide layer into the developer solution and inhibiting development while the silver precipitating layer prevents silver plating out from the fine-grain emulsion on to rollers used to transport the material through the developer solutions. In an alternative embodiment the silver precipitating layer is between the fine-grain emulsion and silver haloiodide layer and prevents complexed silver halide migrating from the finegrain emulsion into the silver haloiodide layer when the material is developed in a solution containing a silver halide solvent.
