Abstract

1377652 Seals; pipe couplings FOSTER WHEELER CORP 15 Nov 1971 [13 Nov 1970] 52978/71 Headings F2B and F2G A seal device for sealingly connecting two relatively movable members comprises a plate 28 or 66 fixed to one member and having, for example, a corrugated zone between linear edge portions to accommodate movement in one direction, and a connecting means 34 or 70 for sealingly connecting the plate to the other member to accommodate movement perpendicular to the first direction. In Fig. 1, a penthouse 10 extends over the top and around four vertical walls 20 of a boiler and is insulated by material 22. The seal device is formed of a corrugated steel plate 28 which permits expansion of, and absorbs heat from, the walls 20, the connecting means consisting of a synthetic plastics bellows 34 clamped by bolts with the interposition of a silicone rubber strip 32. The corrugated plate 28 is welded at one linear edge to an angle-bar 30 and at its opposite linear edge to bolts, the free end of the bolts passing through slots in the rim of the bellows and in an angle-bar 36. In Fig. 6, a steam pipe 60 is sealed to a boiler wall 62 by a corrugated plate 66 welded at one linear edge to a ring 68 which in turn is welded to the pipe and by a bellows 70 connected to the wall and corrugated plate by bolts, the bolts 72 being welded to the non-pressurized side of the corrugated plate as in the other embodiment.
