Abstract

1341256 Seals; valves; pipe couplings T A HARTMAN 19 April 1971 [29 April 1970] 27066/71 Headings F2B F2V and F2G [Also in Division B8] An elastomeric seal is disposed in a channel in secured relation to the sides and is adapted to engage a contacting surface, means being provided to permit movement in shear of the central portion of the seal as the seal and contacting surface are brought into sealing contact with each other. The seal may be made of a rubber or urethane and may be secured to the sides of the channel by bonding or by interlocking ribs, either the base of the seal or the bottom of the channel being provided with an air space for allowing the movement of the central portion of the seal during sealing engagement. The seal may be housed in the seat of a ball-shaped plug valve, Fig. 8, or a butterfly valve, Fig. 11; the seal may also be housed in the movable member of a butterfly valve, Figs. 9, 10 and 13 (not shown). In Fig. 14, the seal 38 is secured to the sides of rings 65, 66 welded to one of the pipes of a pipe joint. In Fig. 20, the seal 38 is applied to the cap of a Mason jar.
