Abstract

1374186 Piercing TOLWOOD MULTIFASTENERS Ltd 29 Nov 1972 55072/72 Heading B3W A pierce nut punch 20 comprises a housing 26, having a nut delivery passage 54 opening into a face 57 for engaging a panel 63, Fig. 9, in which the nut is to be installed, and a plunger 50 displaceable relative to the housing and arranged to force a nut out of the passage into secure relationship with a panel only when the housing is in engagement with the panel. The plunger is secured in an upper housing 24 which is bolted to a press platen 30. The housing 26 is secured in a recess 44 in a guide post 28 which passes through the upper housing and is aligned with a passage 36 in the platen 30. A screw 38 engaging in a key slot connects the post 28 to the upper housing 24. Nuts are fed to the passage 54 along a chute 22 from, e.g. a rotoary hopper. In operation, when the press platen has lowered the face 57 into engagement with the panel 63, the housing 24 slides down the post 28, the plunger 50 forcing a column of flanged nuts making an interference fit with passage 54 downwards to drive the bottom nut into the panel. Should a nut be expelled on top of another nut, the flanges 72 are sheared off the body 68 of the in situ nut is driven through the panel and replaced by the second nut. The sheared off flanges are discharged through channels 60 in the face 57.
