Abstract
1374168 Brazing OOMMISSZRIAT A L' ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 16 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28308/72 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions B4 and G1] A radioactive source-holder, e.g. an alphasource-holder, comprises a cover 11, a body 13 and a membrane 15, all of stainless steel, the membrane 15 which has a thickness of approx. 6 microns extending across aligned openings 17, 19 in the cover 11 and the body 13, respectively, the latter having annular lips 21, 23, respectively, between which the membrane 15 is clamped, the membrane 15 being brazed to portions of the cover 11 and the body 13 situated outwardly of the lips. Fusible packings 29, 31 consisting for example, of rings cut out of a sheet of eutectic alloy of 72% Ag and 28% Cu (mp. 779‹ C.) are placed before brazing in annular grooves 25, 27 in the cover 11 and the body 13, respectively. Some ten source-holders 9 are then stacked together with intermediate and end spacer units 39, 41 and 43, which serve to increase the thermal inertia of the membranes and prevent adjacent source-holders from fusing together, between the checkplates 35, 37 of a clamp formed of a material, e.g. molybdenum, having a coefficient of thermal expansion lower than that of the source-holders. Brazing is carried out under a vacuum of 10<SP>-4</SP> Pascal with a rate of rise and fall of temperature of 15‹ C./ minute and a brazing stage of 15 mins., the complete thermal brazing cycle being from 4 to 5 hours. Finally, the external diameter of the source-holders is machined to the line 33, and the source-holders are then checked forgastightness under helium test in a device such as that of Fig. 8 (not shown).
