840,573. Making labyrinth seals. ROLLSROYCE Ltd., and DELANEY GALLAY Ltd. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 20, 1958], No. 1938/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A labyrinth seal comprises a number of metal strip annuli 19 spaced by separate spacer pieces 21. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the annuli 19 are of metal of, for example, <SP>6</SP>/ 1000 -inch thick and are separated by metal spacers 21 formed with a number of part-spherical dimples 22 and secured to adjacent annuli by spot-welds in a number of the dimples. The sealing portions 19b of the annuli extend beyond the spacers 21 and each annulus has a flange 20 at its outer periphery welded or brazed to a ring 23 and the assembly of annuli and spacers is clamped between rings 24 and 25. In modifications, the spacers are formed with radiallyextending corrugations which may be flat-sided or of sinusoidal form. The annuli may be made by forming a continuous strip of the metal to the desired cross-section by extruding, drawing or rolling and then winding the formed strip around a mandrel to provide a helically-coiled strip from which separate annuli may be cut.
