Abstract

1372116 Paper made from synthetic polymer fibrils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 27 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49681/72 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] A process for preparing polyolefin fibrils for use in papermaking comprises feeding a heated hydrocarbon solvent solution of a polyolefin having an inherent viscosity (defined in the Specification) of at least 3.5 to the inlet 80 of a centrifugal spinning device 22 while simultaneously cooling the periphery of the interior 84 of the device (e.g. by feeding non- solvent for the polymer at a temperature of -10‹C to 40‹C into the interior via inlets 10 and 112), removing the resultant solvent swollen fibrous mass through outlet 64, separating the polymer solvent from the fibrous mass by means of a wringer and/or filtration, beating the fibrous mass in a non-solvent for the polymer (e.g. - isopropanol) which is soluble in the hydrocarbon solvent to separate the mass into a plurality of fibrils containing preferably between 0.25% and 5% by weight of the hydrocarbon solvent and removing the fibrils from the non-solvent liquid by filtration. The centrifugal spinning device 22 comprises stationary cover plate 68 in which is formed the inlet 80 for the polymer solution, disc-like plates 86 and 100 rotatable at high speeds (e.g. 4,000 to 18,000 r.p.m.) via shaft 88, pulley 90 and belt 92, and flails 102 pivotally mounted on pins 104 between the plates 86 and 100 and the heated polymer solution is fed through the inlet 80 to contact the face of plate 86 at a point having a tangential velocity of 100 cm/sec. The hydrocarbon solvent preferably has a boiling range of 155‹-180‹C and the polymer is heated therein to a temperature of 140 to 160‹C. The coolant liquid used to cool the peripherary of the interior of the spinning device is preferably the same solvent used for dissolving the polymer. Where the subsequent use of the fibrils is for non-aqueous solution paper-making the beating non-solvent may be an aliphatic hydrocarbon. Examples relate to the preparation of fibrils of polyethylene and polypropylene and their conversion into paper sheets by slurrying the fibrils to the head box of a Noble and Wood machine and forming the sheets by conventional paper-making techniques.
