Abstract

1371760 Web feeding JAMES HALLEY & SONS Ltd 10 Nov 1972 [26 Nov1971] 54966/71 Heading B8R A web tensioning apparatus associated with a rotary printing press 12, Fig. 1, printing flimsy plastics webs 10 which are drawn off a roll 11 by rollers 13 coupled to variable speed hydraulic drive 14, includes a dancing roller 17 which is supported resiliently on a piston-rod 29 provided with a fixed and a movable tab 32, 33, Fig. 3, the movable tab 33 being displaceable between stops 35, 36 fast with a support 37 which also carries a pair of orifices 40, 41 the flow from which is interrupted by the limited displacement of the tab 33 to actuate a respective one of associated valves (25, 24, Fig. 2). The valves admit compressed air to hydraulic fluid storage tanks in a control unit 18 to supply a respective end of a cylinder (19, Fig. 2) with the fluid. The cylinder piston pivots a lever 20 which controls the speed of the drive 14. The orifice 40 then obturated by the tab 33 causes the drive 14 to operate at a high speed and the orifice 41 causes the drive to operate at a low speed. The tabs 32, 33 are overlapping to prevent rapid hunting of the drive 14 which may be brought about by oscillatory motion of the short movable tab 33. The tabs 32, 33 can be replaced by a pair of concentrically mounted segments one of which is pivotable relative to the other (Fig. 5). The orifices 40, 41 may be replaced by switches or valves tipped by the tabs 32, 33.
