Abstract

1371263 Retractive switches SWITCHES Inc 29 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 9385/72 Heading H1N A switch, for use in a vehicle seat, for example, comprises a housing 150 containing a fixed contact 102 and a movable contact 104 and having two elongated members 108 and 120 extending therefrom, the latter being slidable in said housing, and the former 108 normally supporting the latter 120 spaced therefrom in a substantially planar initial condition and being connected to its distal portion such that deflection by forces applied transversely, as by a person sitting on the seat, causes the member 120 to move longitudinally whereby contact 104 is actuated. As shown member 120 is a stiff wire supported by a spacing member 110 attached to member 120 which comprises a spring metal strip. The contact 102 is offset from the axis of member 120 and the contact blade 104 is shaped (Fig. 12, not shown) to be engageable by an enlarged end 142 of member 120. The device is shown in the deflected condition in Fig. 10, and blade 104 is inherently biased to engage contact 102. When deflecting forces are removed the end 142 urges contact 104 out of engagement with contact 102. The entire actuating means is encased in a flexible sheath 136. To accommodate overtravel and provide automatic adjustment for any permanent set (such as sag in the seat, for example, due to age) a friction coupling between member 108 and 120 is provided. In the embodiment of Fig. 10, this comprises a bowed spring clamp 130 encompassing the end portion 124 of spacer 110 and a small flat plate 126 fixed on the end of wire 120. On overtravel the actuating end 142 abuts the end or bore 144 causing slip between 124 and 126 increasing the effective length of wire 120. On restoration of the switch the contact 104 is urged against abutment 152 causing reverse slip between 124 and 126 to decrease the wire length and maintain switch sensitivity. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 to 6, not shown) the actuating elongated member is a second metal strip (44), instead of wire 120, and the friction clutch is provided at the contacts end by an end-piece (60) spring- clamped to strip (44) and having a slot to receive the moving contact blade with lost motion. Screw (80) and nut (84) are provided in this embodiment to adjust the limits of travel of end-piece (60).
