Abstract

1368730 Polyamide filaments AKZO NV 12 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1836/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C5] Thread-shaped articles are made by melting and spin-drawing polyamide containing at least 80 wt. per cent of nylon 6, the spun yet undrawn product being provided with a spin finish made up of an oil-in-water emulsion containing 0À1-6 wt. per cent of benzyl alcohol. In examples, nylon 6 and a nylon 6/nylon 66 mixture are spundrawn into yarns at 600 m./min. using a 3À7 draw ratio, and applying the spin finish prior to drawing by means of a kissing roll. The oil component of the finish is a mixture of butyl stearate, dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, polyethylene glycol monolaurate, oleyl acid phosphate and KOH. The benzyl alcohol accelerates the transformation of #-crystalline form to α- form during drawing. The resulting low #/α ratio imparts improved stability to heat-treatment.
