Abstract
1366707 Casting processes HEPPENSTALL CO 9 Aug 1971 [14 Oct 1970 18 May 1971] 37383/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] Steel ingots are made by forming a body of degassed molten steel in a mould 10, and continuously supplying molten steel to the mould by vacuum arc remelting an electrode 20 at a rate substantially equal to the rate of volume loss by shrinkage on cooling until the steel in the mould has solidified. The initial body of steel in the mould may be introduced from a ladle 15 located on top of the vacuum chamber 12 in place of the portion 17. The composition of the electrode 20 may be the same as or different from that of the steel initially supplied to the mould.
