Abstract
1366497 Sizing yarns INSTITUT TEXTILE DE FRANCE 3 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 56143/ 71 Heading D1L In a process for sizing yarns, slivers &c of textile fibres a sliver 2 is unwound from a bobbin 1 mounted for rotation on bearings 3 in a support 5 and passes between two pressure rollers 9, 10 into a vat 11 of size, the sized sliver 2' is then passed through a second pair of pressure rollers 12, 13 into a drier 14 and the dried, sized sliver 2" is wound on bobbin- 36, the rollers 9 and 12 of the pressure roller systems being connected by means of V-belts and pulleys to a drive motor having a controllable speed regulator [Fig. 2, not shown] and the first pressure rollers 9, 10 being driven to apply a pulling force to the sliver as it is unwound from the feed bobbin 1. As illustrated the size vat 11 includes a dip roller 15, and a water bath 16 heated by a resistance 17 fed through a thermostat 18 equipped with a thermometer 19, the temperature of the size 11a being maintained constant, preferably at a temperature of 20-100C, during the sizing operation. The lower pressure rollers 10, 13 are preferably of steel and the upper rollers 9, 12 are covered with, for example, rubber and are provided with pressure regulator levers 20 and 21 respectively fot controlling the pressures exerted on the travelling sliver. The hot air drier 14 is provided with an air entry port 33 and a thermometer 34, the sized sliver 2' entering the drier through inlet 28 before making a plurality of turns round two series 29 and 30 of return pulleys 29', 29" and 30', 30" [Fig. 3, not shown] disposed parallel and in the same vertical plane in the drier. The sized sliver may be oiled immediately after sizing by waxing apparatus 38' and/or immediately after drying by apparatus 38. The feed bobbin support frame 6 may be rotatable about axis X-X' to permit removal of several turns of twist from the. sliver 2 before it is sized. Where the slivers to be sized have weak forces of cohesion between their constituent fibres a support or transport filament 39 may be used during the sizing and drying operation. This support filament may be unwound from bobbin 40 and separated from the sized sliver 2" before the drying operation is complete to be wound up on bobbin 43 or alternatively the support filament may be continuous as illustrated by dotted line 39'. In examples slivers of a polyamide (I), a polyester (II) and wool (III) are sized with an aqueous solution of PVA (I and III) and an acrylic polymer (II).
