Abstract

1365292 Reciprocating pumps BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO Ltd 1 Oct 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 46879/70 Heading F1A A pump for liquids, e.g. molten metal, has one or more of its components made of ceramic material, e.g. sintered silicon nitride, and comprises a cylinder 2 with an inlet disc valve 3 and a tubular piston 1 with an outlet valve 9 controlling piston opening 17. Valve 3 has lateral projections, Fig. 2 (not shown), for guiding it in cylinder 2, and has a transverse pin 15 for limiting its opening movement. Pin 15 also is used for opening valve 3 and valve 9 to drain the pump after use. Valve 9 is axially grooved externally, Fig. 3 (not shown), has a hollow interior 11 closed by plug 10, and is weighted by a metal rod or shot placed in its interior. In Fig. 4 (not shown), valve 9 is replaced by a conical valve member (46) with a stem projecting through opening 17 and engaging a guide member (52) for limiting the valve movement. Liquid is discharged from the piston through a ball-jointed spout 24, the angular movement of which is limited by projection 28. As shown, piston 1 is fixed and cylinder 2 reciprocated by rods 41. Alternatively, the cylinder may be fixed and the piston reciprocated.
