Abstract
1365093 Ferric chloride solutions; hydrochloric acid from pickle liquor NEW CANADIAN PROCESSES Ltd 14 July 1971 6570/74 Divided out of 1365091 Heading C1A Ferric chloride is produced by intimately intermingling a liquid aqueous solution of ferrous chloride and free oxygen at a pressure high enough so that a liquid reaction medium is maintained throughout the process, at an elevated temperature (e.g. 120‹ to 500‹ F.) and in the presence of dissolved promoter cations comprising NH4, Cr, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni or Zn cations or mixtures thereof; thereby obtaining an aqueous ferric chloride solution. Finely divided iron oxide particles may be present in the solution when the intermingling is begun. The solution may be or be derived from waste pickle liquor which may have been treated with iron oxide particles to convert its HCl content to iron chloride and which may have been concentrated by evaporation of water therefrom. The product ferric chloride solution may be heated at 250‹ to 400‹ F. to produce HCl, water vapour and an aqueous slurry of iron oxide. In the examples the promoter cations are supplied by NH4Cl, NH4Cl + CuCl2, CoCl2, NiCl2, MnSO4 Cr2(SO4)39H2O, ZnCl2 or CuCl2 + Cr2(SO4)3 and the reaction is carried out at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure. The Specification refers to Specifications 1,365,091 and 1,365,092, which respectively describe and claim methods of producing ferric chloride from ferrous chloride solutions and of producing hydrochloric acid from ferric chloride solutions.
