Abstract

1365092 Hydrochloric acid from pickle liquor NEW CANADIAN PROCESSES Ltd 14 July 1971 6567/74 Divided out of 1365091 Heading C1A Hydrochloric acid is produced by heating a liquid aqueous ferric chloride solution at 250‹ to 400‹ F. at or below atmospheric pressure and taking overhead a stream of water vapour and HCl gas. The solution may be heated by means of injecting hot gases into it, e.g. combustion gases from a burner submerged in the solution. If the solution contains ferrous chloride it may be cooled to precipitate the ferrous chloride which is separated from the solution before it is heated. The solution may be derived from waste pickle liquor which has been treated as described and claimed in Specifications 1,365,091 and 1,365,093 to convert it to a ferric chloride solution.
