1364388 Pipe couplings; pipe stoppers HYDROTECH INTERNATIONAL Inc 21 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 43850/72 Headings F2G and F2P In a pipe coupling or pipe stopper arrangement for a tubular member 13, 100, a housing 41, 85 has at least one annular recess 48, 89 supporting sealing means 55, 92 and at least one annular recess 46, 90 supporting locking means 50, 51 and 95, 98, the sealing and locking means forming annular chambers in the recesses which may be pressurized to urge the sealing and locking means against the tubular member. As shown in Fig. 3, one embodiment of the coupling includes two each of the sealing and locking arrangements. An annular testing or bonding chamber 58 is bounded by the seal rings 55 for testing the efficiency of the seals or for receiving a hardenable epoxy resin if a permanent bonded coupling is needed. The annular chambers in the recesses may also receive such hardenable material. The locking means comprises seal rings 50 and grip rings 51. In another coupling embodiment only one each of the sealing and locking arrangements is provided (Figs. 1, 2, not shown). In one embodiment of a pipe stopper, Fig. 5, the housing 85 includes inner and outer parts 86, 87 each having locking arrangements to be urged by pressure against the tubular member 100. The chambers formed by the locking means are connected by a tube 97 to communicate with the interior of the tubular member 100 so as to be pressurized by fluid therein. The single seal ring 92 is urged by pressure from another source. A pipe 103 and valve 104 may be used to relieve the fluid pressure within the tubular member 100. In another embodiment the outer housing portion 87 is omitted, (Fig. 4, not shown). In other arrangements of the locking means the grip ring may be in two parts with adjacent inclined faces giving a wedging action (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) or a one piece grip ring may have a curved or inclined periphery (Figs. 8-11, not shown) or the grip ring may have a reduced thickness and is located within a split lock ring which is seated inside a seal ring (Fig. 12, not shown).
