Abstract

A pipe coupler comprises a sleeve intended to be pushed onto the end of a pipe and a sealing assembly comprising an annular groove inside the sleeve contg. a sealing element and a chamber filled from outside with a sealing cpd. which is maintained under pressure until it hardens. The sleeve is held to the pipe by a frictional coupler composed of jaws engaged in internal arc-shaped grooves inside the sleeve, also with a sealing element behind the jaws and a chamber filled with a resin which sets under pressure. The sealing element is composed of a hollow, tubular "tyre", housed in the annular groove inside the sleeve, while the pressure chamber of the sealing assembly is this chamber inside this tyre; the sealing element of the gripping assembly is a hollow tube housed in the groove-sectors inside the sleeve, while the pressure chamber of the gripping assembly is the space inside this hollow tube. The coupler is esp. used for oil and gas pipelines. The arrangement enables good seals to be obtd. at very high pressures.
