Abstract

A mandrel (1) having any desired shape is placed inside the end (2) of a tube (3) to be contracted. The mandrel comprises a cylindrical head (4) at one end, provided with a sealing joint (5), resistant to very high pressures, and with a central bore which improved the seal of the joint. At the other end of the mandrel is a screw threaded stub (10) onto which is fixed a nut (11) abutting onto the end of the tube. A supple sealing jacket (12), for example made from india rubber, fits over the end of the tube and is fixed by a circular ring. The whole assembly is placed ina pressure chamber and subjected to a pressure of over 1000 bars resulting in the end of the tube adopting the shape of the mandrel.
