Abstract

The coupling consists of a plastic sleeve which encloses the two tube ends, and, at each end of the sleeve there are clamp and seal elements. The sleeve is expanded at each end with an internal enlargement which receives the seal and clamp components. A rubber seal ring with a cross-section in the shape of a 'T' is inserted into the sleeve end, the inner end of the 'T' fitting into a recess cut into the shoulder of the sleeve, the outer end fitting into the clamping ring and the lower branch protruding into the centre of the sleeve. The seal ring is pref. cut to size from an endless straight 'T' profile, the joint thus formed when the straight section is bent to the form of a ring being sealed by the compressive force exerted on the ring when it is assembled. The seal ring and clamp ring are inserted into the sleeve ends. The inner leg of the seal ring is forced over to form a seal against the outer wall of the tube in accommodating it and the outer surface of the seal is forced against the inner wall of the sleeve thereby completing a tight joint. The use of a continuous rubber profile from which the seal rings are cut enables the same profile to be used for tube couplings of different diameters.
