Abstract
1314178 Clamps FIRTH CLEVELAND FASTENINGS Ltd 27 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 52614/69 Heading E2B [Also in Division F2] A pipe or hose connector comprises an outer first sleeve into which is force fitted a second sleeve, the external surface of which, in whole or in part, is tapered longitudinally, such that the second sleeve when in situ within the first sleeve contracts and grips a pipe or hose positioned within it. The connector can be used either as a separate unit for coupling pipes wherein one pipe is formed as a socket and the second pipe a spigot or alternatively the outer sleeve forms part of one of the pipes. The connector 10 is preferably manufactured in one part, the two sleeves 11, 16 joined by a frangible annulus neck 14 which is broken when the sleeve 16 is forced into the sleeve 11 during assembly. In Fig. 2, the sleeve 16 has an annular rib 21 which cooperates with an annular groove 22 in the sleeve 11. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the sleeve 16 has projections (25) which engage apertures (26) in the sleeve 11. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the connector (39) has two integral sleeves 11 of enlarged cross-sectional diameter at the ends thereof, each sleeve 11 being connected to one of the pipes (40), (41), which have the same diameters, inserted therein. In Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), the outer sleeve of connector 39 is cylindrical and two pipes (40), (41) having the same diameters are coupled together by two tapered sleeves each gripping one of the pipes. In Fig. 8, the sleeve 16 has an annular groove 43 which cooperates with an annular rib 43<SP>A</SP> in sleeve 11. A sleeve 44 is disposed between sleeve 16 and the pipe positioned within it and serves as an additional sealing means. In Fig. 9 (not shown), the connector is the same as that of Fig. 5 (not shown) but the central neck portion (42) is of curved form and is used for joining pipes (40), (41) which are disposed at right angles to each other. In Fig. 10 (not shown), a flexible tube (47) is connected to each of the pipes (45, 46) by any one of the connectors of Figs. 1 to 3. In Fig. 11 (not shown) the inner surface (50) of sleeve 11 is tapered to form a neck of minimum diameter (51) halfway of the length thereof and which enhances the sealing effect when assembled. In Fig. 12, the annulus 14 is interrupted by two diametrically opposed slots 60 thus requiring less force when assembling and a longitudinal notch 61 to allow contraction of sleeve 16. In Fig. 14, the sleeve 16 has a tapered surface 17' arranged between two cylindrical portions whose surfaces are 15' and 71 and is provided with a flange 72, the edge 73 of which, when the joint is assembled, forms a uniform surface with the surface 13 of sleeve 11, Fig. 16 (not shown). In Fig. 17 (not shown), the tapered surface (17") forms a step (17''') between surfaces (15') and (71') on the sleeve 16 which engages a step (12c) in sleeve 11 when assembled. In Fig. 14, and also in Fig. 17 (not shown), a longitudinal slot 70 is formed on sleeve 16 to allow contraction thereof during assembly.
